DMX Address Calculator

Patch a rig across universes, convert absolute addresses to universe/channel, and check what fits in 512 channels — free, no signup.

Patch planner

How many fixtures fit, and where each one lands. Enter your fixture's DMX footprint (channel count of its mode).

Absolute address converter

Consoles and visualisers sometimes use absolute addresses (1–66,048). Convert both ways.

Absolute = (universe − 1) × 512 + address

Universe capacity

Maximum fixtures of one type per DMX universe (no gaps).

How DMX addressing works

A DMX512 universe carries 512 channels. Every fixture occupies a block of consecutive channels — its footprint — starting at its address. A fixture in 34-channel mode addressed at 1 uses channels 1–34; the next fixture starts at 35. When a fixture won't fit before channel 512, it moves to the next universe.

Choosing modes

Most moving lights offer several DMX modes (personalities). A larger footprint gives finer control (16-bit dimming, individual pixel control) but eats universe space faster. Match the mode on the fixture, in your console patch, and on your plot — a mismatch is the most common cause of a fixture "not responding".

sACN & Art-Net

Ethernet protocols carry many universes over one cable: sACN and Art-Net both address fixtures the same way — universe + channel. Plan your universes first; the transport doesn't change the math.
