A moving head is just a lot of DMX channels controlling motors and optics. Learn the core attribute families and you can program any fixture, regardless of brand.
The attribute families
- Position — pan (left/right, up to 540°) and tilt (up/down, ~270°). Usually 16-bit for smooth moves.
- Beam — zoom (cone width), focus (edge sharpness), iris (size) and frost (softening).
- Colour — a fixed wheel, or continuous CMY mixing, plus CTO/CTB correction.
- Gobo — pattern wheels with rotation and indexing for texture and aerials.
- Intensity / shutter — dimmer plus a strobe/shutter for snaps and pulses.
Why mode choice matters
Most movers offer several DMX modes — "basic" might be 16 channels, "extended" 32. Extended adds 16-bit movement and extra control at the cost of a bigger footprint in the universe. Pick the smallest mode that gives you the control the show actually needs.
